It was early October 1989, 40° below zero when I boarded the seven am Alaska Airlines flight departing Anchorage for Honolulu. I’ll never forget how it felt to walk off that aircraft at lunchtime in Oahu
for the first time in my life. Tropical flowers filled the air. Here I was in layer after layer of thermal Arctic gear and snow packs! I felt like I was melting! I couldn’t get to the bathroom fast enough to delayer, change into summer clothes and rubber slippers. I felt like I had arrived at home in a place I’d never been before.
The layover for my inter-island departure to Big Island wasn’t until after sunset. I had all day to explore a place I’d always dreamed of living in.
An arrival in Hilo after dark meant I started work the very next morning, along with house hunting and vehicle hunting. All the unusual things that go along with a relocation for work. Eventually I settled in a beautiful, brand new, modular blue house in Pahoa. I really miss my cozy house near some favorite, local, surf spots. Too bad the volcano blew. We’d need a time machine to visit that neighborhood today.
